DIY Accent Wall Transformation: From Start to Finish

Welcome to my very first DIY project: creating an accent wall outside our bedroom! This journey was full of lessons, creativity, and a little bit of chaos, but it was all worth it in the end. If you're looking to tackle your own DIY project or just want some inspiration, keep reading as I walk you through the entire process, from planning to the big reveal.

Part 1: Getting Started

I’ve been dreaming of doing DIY projects around our home for a while, and let’s just say my to-do list is huge! But I wanted to start small to test my skills and build confidence. That’s how the idea of a cozy accent wall outside our bedroom came to life.

I started by gathering the basics: inspiration, materials, and tools. The key here was learning what I was capable of and easing into the process. This part of the journey taught me how important it is to just start—even if you’re unsure! Follow-through is what counts.

Part 2: The Process

This stage was where the real work began. I gathered supplies, measured everything (multiple times), and started prepping the space. Of course, I quickly learned that no matter how prepared you think you are, something will always come up. I had to make numerous overnight orders for things I forgot or didn’t even realize I’d need.

The lesson? It’s okay to make mistakes. The only way to improve is by doing, and sometimes that means learning as you go. I also discovered so many tips and tricks along the way—like how to properly measure, prep, and troubleshoot.

Part 3: Painting & The Big Reveal

Once the prep work was done, it was time for the fun part: painting and decorating! I selected a paint color that would add warmth and depth to the space, giving it a stylish yet cozy vibe. With every brushstroke, the vision started coming to life.

After painting, I added some beautiful prints from our engagement shoot:

DIY Accent Wall Reveal to my Husband

And then came the moment I had been waiting for—showing my husband the finished project! He was out of town for 5 days for a wedding and had absolutely NO idea I was working on this, so his surprise and reaction made all the hard work worth it. Seeing his genuine excitement was such a rewarding moment for me.

What I Learned

  1. Start Small: Beginning with a manageable project helped me gain confidence and figure out my strengths and weaknesses.

  2. Be Flexible: No project goes perfectly. Adaptability is key when things don’t go as planned.

  3. Enjoy the Process: Even the mistakes and extra steps are part of the journey. Embrace them and have fun!
